What Healthy Boundaries Really Look Like

Charles E. Winton, Jr.

Many of us were taught that saying “no” is selfish. In reality, boundaries are one of the most loving things you can offer — to yourself and to the people around you.
Signs you may need a boundary
- You feel resentful after saying yes
- You dread certain calls, texts or visits
- You're exhausted from carrying other people's emotions
- You feel guilty for resting
Start small
Pick one situation this week. Decide what you are and aren't available for, and say it simply and kindly: “I can't take that on right now.” You don't owe a long explanation.
A boundary is not about controlling someone else. It's about deciding what you will do.
If setting boundaries feels impossible, that's often a sign of deeper roots worth exploring with a counselor. You don't have to figure it out alone.
